The Great Newsome Brewery is situated here on the East Yorkshire Coast close to the City of Hull and is run by the Hodgson family at Great Newsome Farm. Four generations of the Hodgson family have grown crops at Great Newsome Farm in the rich soil of Holderness, and as well as brewing, farming is still a very busy part of life here at Great Newsome.
The brewery first brewed here in May 2007, following extensive research on the local and regional real ale market and peoples growing awareness of locally produced food and drink. Following two successful grant applications to both DEFRA and Growing Routes the Hodgson's converted some former Victorian livestock buildings into a purpose built brewery and installed a brand new 10 barrel brew plant.
After time spent at Brewlab at the University of Sunderland and time spent with an experienced brewer, it was felt that the brewing team here at Great Newsome were ready to paddle their own boat and began writing recipes and trial brewing. The effort and hard work culminated in an official launch at the end of May 2007 with strong support from the local press and tv.
All brewery operations are over looked by Jem the brewery's Springer Spaniel, who is the key part of the brewery logo. Jem can be seen keeping her eye on a pint of ale due to her life passion of staring into holes, puddles and ponds for hours on end, and some say that she looks very similar to another famous logo, but we couldn't possibly comment.
Much of the early press, featured around Jem, whos various newspaper and t.v. appearances have made her a star.

The breweries first recognition came in October by being Highly Commended in the Best Point of Sale category in the 2007 Society of Independent Brewers Local Brewing Business Awards, for the use of Jem in our logos and POS material. |
