about great newsome brewery

The Great Newsome Brewery is situated here on the East Yorkshire Coast close
to the City of Hull and is run by the Hodgson family at Great Newsome Farm. Four generations of the Hodgson family have grown crops at Great Newsome Farm in the rich soil of Holderness, and as well as brewing, farming is still a very busy part of life here at Great Newsome.

The brewery first brewed here in May 2007, following extensive research on the local and regional real ale market and peoples growing awareness of locally produced food and drink.

The brewery has continued to grow since then from offering two real ales to begin with to now offering at least five cask beers and five bottle beers at any one time. This is supplemented by regular cask swaps with a number of other like minded breweries nationwide. The brewery now regularly delivers direct to pubs, farmshops, restaurants and clubs throughout Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

The breweries logo is Jem, the English Springer Spaniel who can be seen keeping her eye on a pint of ale which came about due to her life passion of staring into holes, puddles and ponds for hours on end. Jem became a popular feature of the brewery until she passed away at nearly 14 years of age in April 2010. To commemorate her life we named April’s seasonal ale after her as it was brewed on the day she died.

jem and ruby

September 2010 saw another arrival in the shape of Ruby. This little whirlwind has already become a firm favourite at the brewery and will no doubt become as iconic as Jem.

The breweries first recognition came in October by being Highly Commended in the Best Point of Sale category in the 2007 Society of Independent Brewers Local Brewing Business Awards, for the use of Jem in our logos and POS material.

The Hodgsons are very passionate about quality real ale and feel that as Holderness's only brewery that local names, dialects and features should be used in naming many of the ales brewed, hence "Sleck Dust", "Pricky back Otchan" etc.
